A father and his young son walk south through a burned and ash-covered America toward the coast, pushing a shopping trolley with everything they own. The cause of the apocalypse is never named. Most other survivors are dangerous. The father is dying. The novel strips human experience down to its irreducible core - the love between a parent and child, and the question of whether that love is enough reason to keep going.
