James Haddock is an American author of fantasy and science fiction, whose books range across sword-and-sorcery, space adventure, steampunk and the post-apocalyptic.
A retired US Army warrant officer with more than two decades of service, he turned to writing full time and took to the road, touring the United States by RV with his wife. A self-described 'pantser' who writes without an outline, he calls storytelling 'a therapeutic way to get excited about life', and has built a substantial following since his 2019 debut, The Derelict Duty.
His science fiction includes the Duty trilogy, in which a young crew member survives a meteor strike on a family-run space tug, while his fantasy tends toward tales of soldiers and self-made mages: in Mage Throne Prophecy a modern soldier awakes reincarnated in the body of a medieval prince and must survive a treacherous court while concealing his hard-won combat skills, and Rise of the Shadow Mage has become his most widely read book. Other titles, among them Hand Made Mage and the co-written Dragon's Envoy, span some twenty books and a restless variety of worlds.
Prolific and genre-hopping, he writes the kind of fast, inventive adventure fiction that has found a steady audience among independent-fantasy readers.
