Sou Akaike is the pen name of the Japanese author of Easygoing Territory Defense by the Optimistic Lord, a relaxed 'territory-building' fantasy light novel. As is usual for light-novel writers, no public biography exists.
The series began as a web novel on the Japanese platform Shosetsuka ni Naro ('Let's Become a Novelist') in 2020 before print publication by Overlap. Its hero is Van Ney Fertio, a young reincarnated prodigy gifted with rare 'creation' magic, who is written off and exiled by his disappointed father to govern a poor, struggling village - and cheerfully sets about turning it, with cleverness and craft rather than conquest, into the strongest fortified city around while fending off rivals who covet his land.
Illustrated by Kururi and published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment, the series placed among the top titles at the 2022 Next Light Novel Awards and has been adapted into both a manga and, in 2026, a television anime. It is Sou Akaike's defining work.
