Tanya Huff is a Canadian author of fantasy and science fiction, born in Halifax in 1957, prized for brisk, witty storytelling across urban fantasy and military SF.
Before writing full time she served for four years as a cook in the Canadian Naval Reserve and spent nearly a decade behind the counter of Toronto's celebrated science-fiction bookshop, Bakka - a working life that gave her fiction its practical, unpretentious grounding. She lives in rural Ontario with her wife, the fantasy author Fiona Patton, and a household of cats.
Her Blood Books introduced the private investigator Vicki Nelson and the vampire Henry Fitzroy - the illegitimate son of Henry VIII - and were adapted for television as Blood Ties. In a very different register, her Confederation series, beginning with Valor's Choice, follows the redoubtable Staff Sergeant Torin Kerr through interstellar war, while the Gale-family magic of The Enchantment Emporium and the recent Direct Descendant show her range across contemporary fantasy.
A long-serving, much-liked figure in Canadian genre fiction, she is known for heroines who are competent, funny and thoroughly her own.
