Anita Brookner (1928-2016) was an English novelist and art historian. She was the first woman to hold the Slade Professorship of Fine Art at Cambridge and began writing fiction in her fifties. Her quiet, precise novels about lonely, self-contained women include Hotel du Lac, which won the Booker Prize in 1984.
