Rati Mehrotra is an Indo-Canadian author of science fiction and fantasy.
Born and raised in India, she now lives and writes in Toronto, and her fiction draws richly on Indian history, mythology and cuisine, with food, by her own admission, often sneaking its way into her worldbuilding.
Her debut duology, published by Harper Voyager, began with Markswoman, in which an order of magical-knife-wielding female assassins brings both peace and chaos to their post-apocalyptic world in a bewitching blend of science fiction and epic fantasy, completed by its sequel Mahimata.
She then turned to young adult fantasy with Night of the Raven, Dawn of the Dove, set in a monster-infested alternate medieval India, where a young guardswoman struggles with her unwitting role as a pawn in the deadly games between two kingdoms, followed by Flower and Thorn in 2023, about a young flower hunter drawn into the succession politics of a magical Sultanate.
Her short stories have been shortlisted for the Sunburst Award, nominated for the Aurora Award, and have appeared in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Lightspeed, Uncanny and Apex.
When not writing, she is often to be found in the kitchen, experimenting with new recipes.
