Eric Shanower is an American cartoonist, born in Key West, Florida, in 1963 to a Coast Guard family that moved every couple of years, and trained at the Kubert School, the trade's great apprenticeship.
His life's work is Age of Bronze, published by Image Comics since 1998: a complete retelling of the Trojan War that weaves every version of the legend, from Homer down through the centuries of retellings, into a single continuous story, drawn with scrupulous archaeological accuracy and set properly in the thirteenth century BCE, with no gods on stage and every tragedy wholly human.
The New York Times Book Review praised its uncanny psychological insight, Archaeology magazine judged it better than any film ever made about Bronze Age Greece, and it has won him Eisner Awards for Best Writer/Artist along with Italy's Gran Guinigi.
His other great devotion is Oz: a childhood love of L. Frank Baum's books became his own Adventures in Oz graphic novels, the co-founding of Hungry Tiger Press to keep Baum's legacy in print, and the New York Times bestselling Marvel adaptations of six Oz books with artist Skottie Young.
He also wrote the Eisner-winning Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland with Gabriel Rodriguez.
He lives in Portland, Oregon, with his husband, David Maxine.
