Ian C. Esslemont is a Canadian writer and archaeologist who co-created the Malazan world with Steven Erikson, originally as a setting for role-playing games. He has written two series in that world, Novels of the Malazan Empire and Path to Ascendancy, alongside Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen. Blood and Bone is set in the jungle continent of Jacuruku.
