Adam Kay is a British writer, comedian and former doctor, born in Brighton in 1980, best known for the phenomenally successful memoir This Is Going to Hurt.
He trained in obstetrics and gynaecology and worked as a junior doctor for six years before a traumatic case and its lasting toll led him to leave medicine for comedy and writing. Out of the diaries he had kept on the wards came This Is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor, a book by turns hilarious and devastating about life in an overstretched NHS; it sold millions of copies, was translated into dozens of languages, and swept the National Book Awards. He went on to create and write its acclaimed BBC television adaptation, starring Ben Whishaw, which won him a BAFTA for best drama writing.
He has since kept up a prolific and varied output: the festive companion Twas the Nightshift Before Christmas, the memoir Undoctored, the best-selling children's science series that began with Kay's Anatomy, and his first novel, A Particularly Nasty Case.
He lives in Oxfordshire with his husband, the producer James Farrell, and their children.
