Pierce Brown is an American author, born in Denver, Colorado, in 1988, best known for the sweeping science-fiction saga Red Rising.
He grew up across seven US states and worked in politics, tech start-ups and, briefly, NBC's page programme; famously, he wrote six novels and was turned down by more than a hundred agents before his breakthrough, which he drafted in a matter of months while living hand-to-mouth.
That book was Red Rising, the story of Darrow, a lowly 'Red' labourer toiling beneath the surface of Mars in a brutally stratified society colour-coded by caste, who infiltrates the ruling 'Gold' elite to bring the whole edifice down. Bloody, operatic and headlong, it grew into a bestselling series - continuing through Golden Son and Morning Star and then a second arc across Iron Gold, Dark Age and Light Bringer - spanning a terraformed solar system and a revolution's long, costly aftermath.
