S.D. McKittrick is a self-published author of LitRPG, the genre of stat-driven, game-like fantasy adventure, and a prolific one, with dozens of books across a string of series.
He keeps his public profile deliberately simple, describing himself as a family man whose writing 'started off small, and grew from a high school fantasy all the way to writing his first novel'. He adds only one detail about the work itself: that all of his books carry 'a tinge of romance'.
His most popular series is Homestead Crafter, a cosy, slice-of-life LitRPG in which a young man saddled with an unwanted crafting class is cast out by his family, sets himself up as a settler in the Wilds, and - mysteriously attractive to the forest's creatures - builds a homestead as a self-made Master of Crafts. Alongside it run darker and more expansive series, among them the post-apocalyptic Ashen Realm, the fantasy Voice of the Gods and Bloodline of the Phoenix.
Away from writing, he says, he spends his time with his wife and children - often, by his own account, making sweets with his son and daughter.
