Barbara Vine was the name Ruth Rendell used for fourteen psychological novels, from A Dark-Adapted Eye (1986) to The Child's Child (2012). Slower and darker than her Inspector Wexford mysteries, the Vine books trace how a crime grows out of family secrets and the long reach of the past, often uncovered decades later. A Dark-Adapted Eye won the Edgar Award for Best Novel, and A Fatal Inversion and King Solomon’s Carpet each won the Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger.
