The third volume of The History of Middle-earth gathers Tolkien's two long narrative poems of the First Age, both left unfinished: The Lay of the Children of Húrin, in alliterative verse, and The Lay of Leithian, the story of Beren and Lúthien in rhyming couplets. Christopher Tolkien's commentary is joined by C. S. Lewis's playful mock-scholarly critique of the Lay of Leithian.
