The first volume of The History of Middle-earth. The Book of Lost Tales was J. R. R. Tolkien's first attempt at his mythology, begun during the First World War. A mariner, Eriol, comes to the island of Tol Eressëa, where the Elves tell him of the Valar, the making of the world, the coming of the Elves and the theft of the Silmarils. Christopher Tolkien presents the tales with a commentary tracing how they became The Silmarillion.
