Peter Guillam, George Smiley's loyal colleague, is called back to London from his retirement in Brittany. The children of two people who died in an old Cold War operation - Alec Leamas and Liz Gold, from The Spy Who Came in from the Cold - are suing the Secret Service, and the past Guillam and Smiley thought buried has come back to be judged.
