The second Liveship Traders novel deepens the political and personal crises established in Ship of Magic, with the Vestrit family's situation deteriorating on multiple fronts and Vivacia's sentience developing in directions none of her owners anticipated. The novel expands the role of the Rain Wilds and begins to connect the liveship mythology more explicitly to the Elderling civilisation that underlies the universe. Malta Vestrit's arc is among the most carefully observed coming-of-age narratives in the sequence, and Kennit's characterisation becomes considerably more complex. The Mad Ship is generally regarded as the strongest individual volume of the Liveship Traders for the density and quality of its character work.
