In 1881 Beth Ackerley, a former companion who has inherited a fortune, meets Lord Ian Mackenzie, the youngest of four Scottish brothers. Society thinks him mad; he spent his youth in an asylum and does not behave as others do. Ian is drawn to Beth and warns her off the man she is about to marry, and the two are soon caught up in a murder investigation that points back at Ian.
