The first Tintin adventure, and the one Hergé spent the rest of his life apologising for. Tintin and Snowy are sent from Brussels to report on the Soviet Union, where they are pursued by the secret police through a country of staged factories and rigged elections. Drawn week by week for a Catholic newspaper in 1929 with no plot planned in advance, it is cruder than everything that followed: black and white, loosely drawn, and openly propagandistic. Hergé refused to have it reissued for decades and later dismissed it as "a transgression of my youth". It is included here for completeness, as the starting point of a series that quickly became something very different.
