Penric, a young lord on his way to his betrothal, stops to help an old woman who has collapsed by the road. She is a temple divine, and when she dies the demon she carried passes to him, bringing with it the memories of two centuries of previous hosts. Penric has to learn to live with it, and to deal with the people who would like to see the demon removed. A novella set in Bujold's World of the Five Gods.
