In 1919 Major Brendan Archer travels to Ireland to visit Angela Spencer, the woman he became engaged to during the war. Her family owns the Majestic, a grand hotel in the seaside town of Kilnalough that is slowly falling apart. As the Irish War of Independence breaks out around them, Archer stays on among the hotel's eccentric guests and its decaying rooms.
