A small, half-forgotten military intelligence department, desperate to recover its wartime importance, seizes on a report of Soviet missiles near the West German border and sends Fred Leiser, a former agent long out of practice, across the frontier to find out the truth. Running the operation on outdated methods and wishful thinking, the department heads for disaster while George Smiley looks on from the sidelines.
