Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books are set in a kingdom guarded by its Heralds, chosen by white horses called Companions to serve as its judges, messengers and protectors. Since Arrows of the Queen in 1987 the world has grown to more than forty novels across a dozen series, some written with Larry Dixon, reaching from the Mage Wars long before the kingdom existed, through its founding, to the centuries after. Each series stands on its own. Most readers start with Arrows of the Queen; the chronological order follows the history from its earliest days.
