Accessibility Statement
Last updated: March 2026
Our Commitment
Book Assembly is committed to making our service accessible to as many people as possible. We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 (opens in new tab) at Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities, including visual, hearing, motor, and cognitive impairments.
Conformance Status
Book Assembly is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. "Partially conformant" means that some parts of the content do not yet fully meet the standard. The known gaps are listed in the "Known Limitations" section below, and we are working to close them.
How We Test
We assess accessibility using a combination of approaches:
- Manual testing: Keyboard-only navigation and checks against the WCAG 2.2 Level AA success criteria during development
- Automated checks: Automated accessibility tooling run as part of our development and testing process
- Assistive technology: Spot-checks with screen readers to confirm content is announced clearly
This statement was last reviewed in March 2026. As a small team we do not currently commission a formal third-party audit, but we welcome feedback that helps us improve (see below).
What We Do
We take the following steps to support accessibility:
- Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements can be reached and operated using a keyboard alone
- Screen reader support: We use semantic HTML, ARIA labels, and descriptive text to support assistive technologies
- Colour contrast: Text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA contrast ratios in both light and dark themes
- Touch targets: Buttons and interactive elements have a minimum size of 44px for comfortable use on touch devices
- Responsive design: The service works across a wide range of screen sizes and zoom levels
- Reduced motion: Animations are kept minimal and respect the prefers-reduced-motion setting where possible
- Focus indicators: Visible focus outlines are provided for keyboard navigation
Known Limitations
Book Assembly is currently in beta, and we are aware of some areas where accessibility could be improved:
- Book cover images: Some cover images sourced from external APIs may lack descriptive alt text. We display the book title as alt text where possible.
- Barcode scanner: The camera-based barcode scanning feature requires visual interaction and may not be accessible to all users. ISBN can be entered manually as an alternative.
We are actively working to address these limitations as the service develops.
