Copyright & Intellectual Property

Last updated: 14 July 2026

Book Assembly respects the intellectual property rights of others, and we ask everyone who uses Book Assembly to do the same. If you believe that content on Book Assembly infringes your copyright, trade mark, or other rights, you can tell us using the steps below. You do not need an account, and you can report content whether or not you are a Book Assembly member.

What Book Assembly hosts

Most of what you see about a book - its title, author, description, and default cover image - comes from third-party catalogues (ISBNdb and Open Library), not from us. When you report a concern, it helps to tell us which kind of content you mean:

  • Content our members add - reviews, reading lists, profile text, and cover images a member has uploaded themselves. We can act on these directly.
  • Catalogue information - book details and default cover images drawn from our data providers. If your concern is with the underlying catalogue, we will point you to the right provider, and remove or hide the item on Book Assembly where we can.

Reporting content that infringes your rights

Please email support@bookassembly.co.uk with the following, so we can act quickly:

  1. The work or right you hold - a description of the copyrighted work, or the trade mark or other right.
  2. Where the content is - the exact address (URL) of the page, and the username of the member who shared it, so we can find it.
  3. Proof you hold the right, or that you are authorised to act for the person who does.
  4. Your contact details - your name, email address, and where relevant a postal address.
  5. A statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised by you, your agent, or the law.
  6. A statement that the information you have given is accurate.

If you are a Book Assembly member, you can also report a specific book, list, or profile from the report option on that page, or use the contact form and choose “Copyright / IP Infringement”.

What happens after you report

We review every report we receive and aim to respond within 14 days. Where a report is valid, we remove or disable access to the content promptly and let the member who shared it know. We may ask you for more information if we need it to act. We keep a record of the reports we receive and the action we take.

If your content was removed

If content you shared has been removed and you believe that was a mistake, or that you are entitled to use it, you can ask us to look again. Email support@bookassembly.co.uk with:

  1. The content that was removed, and where it used to be on Book Assembly.
  2. Why you believe it should not have been removed - for example, that you hold the rights or have permission.
  3. Your contact details.
  4. A statement that the information you have given is accurate.

We will review your challenge and, where appropriate, restore the content. If the two sides disagree, we may keep the content removed until the dispute is resolved between you and the person who reported it.

Repeated infringement

Members who repeatedly share content that infringes other people's rights may have their account suspended or removed, in line with our Terms of Service.

Reporting responsibly

Please only report content when you genuinely believe your rights are being infringed. Knowingly making a false or misleading report can carry legal consequences, and it takes our attention away from genuine concerns.
