SMERSH, the Soviet organisation for killing enemies of the state, plans to destroy James Bond and humiliate the British Secret Service. The bait is a young cipher clerk, Tatiana Romanova, who offers to defect from the Soviet consulate in Istanbul with a coding machine - if Bond himself comes to collect her. The fifth Bond novel ends with a long and deadly journey home on the Orient Express.
