Import from StoryGraph
If you have been using StoryGraph and want to try Book Assembly, you can bring your library with you. The import picks up your books, ratings, reviews, and all the extra detail that makes StoryGraph data so rich, like moods, pace, and content warnings.
Getting your export file
StoryGraph sends your export as an email rather than an instant download. Request the export from your StoryGraph settings, wait for the email to arrive, then upload the CSV file to Book Assembly. From there, the step-by-step wizard handles everything.
What comes across
StoryGraph exports are packed with detail, and Book Assembly makes the most of it:
- Books and authors
- Star ratings (StoryGraph's quarter-star ratings are rounded to the nearest half-star)
- Written reviews
- Reading status and dates
- Tags, mapped to Book Assembly lists
- Moods, pace, and content warnings
- Re-reads, ownership status, and book format
- DNF (did not finish) status, which StoryGraph supports natively
What doesn't come across
There are a few things StoryGraph doesn't include in its export file: page count, publisher, publication year, genres, and series information. These fields simply aren't part of the CSV that StoryGraph generates. You can add this detail manually in Book Assembly after the import, or use the book search to fill in gaps.
Content warnings
Book Assembly has a predefined list of content warnings that covers the most common ones. During the import, your StoryGraph content warnings are matched against this list. Any that don't match are created as custom warnings, so nothing gets lost.
The import wizard
The same friendly wizard used for Goodreads imports works here too. You get to select which books to import, map your StoryGraph tags to Book Assembly lists, and match author names for consistency. Once you confirm, the import runs in the background - you'll get an email when it's done. Cover images can be found automatically too, or you can skip that and add them later.
Import limits
Each import handles up to 1,000 books. If your StoryGraph library is larger, you can import in batches.
