Andy Weir is an American author and former software engineer whose debut novel The Martian began as a self-published serial posted free on his website, accumulated a substantial following through word of mouth, and was eventually picked up by a major publisher before being adapted into a successful film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon.
The Martian established the qualities that define his work: meticulous scientific research, problem-solving as narrative engine, and a protagonist whose primary tool for survival is competence rather than heroism. The humour is dry and consistent, the technical detail unusually rigorous for popular fiction, and the underlying optimism about human ingenuity is entirely unironic.
His subsequent novels Artemis and Project Hail Mary have consolidated his reputation, the latter in particular receiving widespread critical enthusiasm for its inventive premise and the warmth of its central relationship. Project Hail Mary is broadly considered his finest work to date.
