N. K. Jemisin - Nora Keita Jemisin - is an American writer, born in 1972, one of the most acclaimed and influential fantasy novelists of her generation.
Before writing full time she worked as a counselling psychologist, and that attentiveness to how people carry trauma and injustice runs through fiction preoccupied with oppression, power and survival. In 2020 she was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship, the 'genius grant'.
Her towering achievement is the Broken Earth trilogy - The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate and The Stone Sky - set on a far-future Earth wracked by apocalyptic 'Fifth Seasons', following people able to control seismic energy who are enslaved for the very power that could save the world. With it she made history, winning the Hugo Award for Best Novel three years running - the first author ever to do so, and the first to win for every book in a trilogy. Her earlier Inheritance trilogy and her Great Cities books, beginning with The City We Became, show the same fierce intelligence and world-building ambition.
